This drawn design was the character designs for the second episode in the new series, “The New Scooby Doo Movies,” that was released in 1972. This episode was the beginning of a long running cartoon franchise for Batman and his crime fighting adventures. Setting the stage for future episodes of this dynamic team up, Scoob and the cape crusader would go on to fight crime in one more episode as a part of The New Scooby Doo Movies series, and later in the movies Scooby Doo meets Batman, and Scooby Doo! And Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
The creation of the team up also set the stage for the 1973 release of Hanna Barbera’s separate tv series called “The Super Friends,” were they collaborated with the DC comic creators to produce a cartoon that featured well-known characters such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Robin, and Aquaman. This was the first debut of Batman and Robin in cartoon form on a televised platform. The dynamic duo did have a live action tv series in 1966 called “Batman,” and a successful comic franchise that released its first issue in 1939.
The release of this episode debuting the caped crusader in cartoon form was a major step up for both the DC and Scooby Doo franchise. The series, “The New Scooby Doo Movies,” featured many well-known personalities and fantasy characters of that time. The incorporation of living celebrities such as the Harlem Globetrotters, the Three Stooges, Sonny and Cher, Don Knotts, and many other famous faces provided the Scooby Doo series with a new fan base, and great recognition in households across the nation.
This perspective of reaching consumers on a level of personal interest is another visual proof of how Scooby-Doo remained relevant with the pop culture icons of that time and allowed for future evolutions of the Scooby Doo show.
